The future USS John P. Murtha (LPD-26) will be commissioned on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia. John P. Murtha’s keel was laid down on June 6, 2012 at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on October 30, 2014, with her christening on March 21, 2015.
The presentation will discuss LPD 17 Class ship propulsion specific to the Philadelphia Gear supplied Main Reduction Drive. Philadelphia Gear has supplied the main reduction drives for LPD 17 through LPD 27 and is presently manufacturing LPD 28. Discussion will include history of design, configuration, manufacture and execution of the drive and its success in the fleet and the potential use on new Navy classes of ships.
